River: Different Moods

River: Different Moods

We are very much back into the routine of riverside walks in the pursuit of otter activity.  No sightings to report but several fresh spraint and tracks provide some optimism. Over the past few months I’ve kept a little busy looking at different ways the capture the river.  Here are a few below.  I hope you like them. And here comes the rain…. Falling autumn leaves being carried with the current. Leaf underwater trapped between rocks The last hour of light along the Río Piloña. Share...

Whilst waiting for otters …

Whilst waiting for otters …

We’ve finally been able to resume otter watching along the Río Sella and Río Piloña.  Autumn is now here and that means less canoeists, fisherman and higher water levels.  I’m sure the otters revert to night-time hunting during the summer months. We’ve been exploring a few promising new locations over the past few weeks.  Still no luck but we discovered a few otter tracks.  Optimistic! Although we enjoy wating by the riverside, distractions are always welcome, so I’ve been experimenting with different styles of photography. Lamprey

Lamprey

The otters remain invisible.  I hope the next month is more fortuitous.  The weather in April prevented us for looking extensively and together with fisherman in search of trout and salmon we’ve had little to go on. However, early this morning I spotted a crow picking at something on the riverbank.  Upon closer inpsection it turned out to be a small lamprey.  The chewed tail points towards an otter.  I’m always intrigued by the thoughts of a lamprey, their appearance is like a creature from another planet. Possibly chewed by an otter The end of line for a cormorant on el Río Piloña near Infiesto Share...

Where are the autumn colours?

Where are the autumn colours?

October was the summer this year.  Each autumn I look forward to the transformation of green into reds, yellows and browns.  There wasn’t much sign of the changing colours whilst walking along the Río Sella near Cangas de Onís.  I’ll keep waiting… Share...

Love is in the air

Love is in the air

We came across a pair of mating common toads (Bufo bufo) during a short excursion along the clear waters of the Rio Dobra on the western edge of the Picos de Europa. The male common toad is generally smaller than the female and clasp their mate in a special hold during mating, prior to spawning.  They can remain like this for some days. They are said to return to the same stretch of water year after year, so I will make a note to visit next spring. Share...
