Trail Camera – Discovering Animal Pathways in Asturias

Trail Camera – Discovering Animal Pathways in Asturias

Animals frequently use the same paths and tracks to move around their environment.  It could be a route towards a water source or a preferred track for entering a den, sett or resting place. We’ve been fortunate to have access to an area with a well established path.  Although situated close to a village, it’s positioned near a mountain and woodland area.  Badgers have been seen all through the summer, feeding on the fruit from figs trees. It’s an ideal location to prepare a longer term project. So, the goal was to record the species that regularly share the same pathway and try to obtain some interesting video clips. The junction point and main focus of our efforts Even during the summer months and through the thick undergrowth we could spot potential paths. We also discovered badger prints close by, a promising sign. We placed a trail camera on what appeared to be a junction point, just off the main pathway. The tree stump became a badger’s latrine for a period...

Trail Camera – Badger, Genet and Wild Boar

Trail Camera – Badger, Genet and Wild Boar

It has been a game of patience with the camera trap over the past 6 weeks.  I’ve positioned the camera at a friend’s hotel and farm – Posada del Valle.  We used several locations around the farm and surrounding woodland with varying degrees of success. The sensitivity of the camera is impressive, even picking out mice moving through long grass.  However, this advantage comes at a price, 30 clips of grass and branches blowing in the wind can be very frustrating! I’m very pleased to catch sight of the genet again and the wild boar wallow appears well established and I’m very hopeful for future recording there. Share...

Trail Camera – Woodland animals in Asturias

Trail Camera – Woodland animals in Asturias

The first post of the year brings some exciting clips from the camera trap. After I experimented with various angles in an attempt to avoid the wind triggering the sensor, I positioned the camera around an old tree stump in the wooded area close to the mountains. I left it in this location for 3 weeks, although I swapped the memory card 4 times to check any recordings. I eagerly await some front view clips of the marten and genet. Hope you enjoy it. Share...
