The Dunnock

The Dunnock

Some say the dunnock (Prunella modularis) is a dull bird. True it’s small, brown and quite nervous moving low through bushes and flower beds but it was the first bird that christened my new camera so I’m sticking up for it! It possesses a very pleasant song if not beautiful plumage. Share...

The Robin

The Robin

The robin is a very kind bird to photographers.  I never bore of photographing them even just for practice, with a little persuasion they can act like avian models. Over the winter we received an influx of robins to northern Spain escaping the harsh winter in Scandavia.  An interesting site seeing dozens of red breasted birds in such a concentrated area. The Pied Wagtail

The Pied Wagtail

Pied Wagtails intrigue me.  They seem to have a death wish, neurotically wagging their long tail up and down and scampering across roads and car parks in search of food. The local ones aren’t quite so crazy around cars (probably wary of spanish drivers) and mainly confine themselves to rocks within the river and the narrow banks.  They are difficult to photograph unless you like small black and white specks.  So I am pleased to have captured a quick shot of this one perched on a low branch, it just looked round at the right moment. The Goosander

The Goosander

Two goosanders appeared about a month ago, the first time we’ve seen them along this river. They are members of the sawbill family, so called because they possess a serrated bill used for hunting fish. We watched them fishing which is certainly an interesting spectical.  With its head beneath the water they search for fish and when one is located they motor along at speed with thrashing their feet in chase.  They have numerous unsuccessful attempts but we have witnessed it catch several fish, although one large trout was stolen by a watchful gull (see Picture 3). The Bullfinch

The Bullfinch

No otters today but as we strolled the river path we seemed to push along a pair of bullfinches that flew 10m ahead or so each time we got too close. The morning sky provided an interesting reddish orange colour which I think you’ll detect in the photo of this male bullfinch performing acrobatics. Share...
